Farmsitting Day 2

It was lovely waking up shortly after the sun came up to the sounds of birds, a lot of birds, singing and chirping.  It is much easier getting out of bed out in the country, or at least I find it that way.   Evie also woke up promptly to run to the hen house.

There were no eggs in the nests but there was one in a corner under the roosts, where I could not fit, in she goes to retrieve it.  As you can tell by her face it was a little stinky and she wanted out fast.  But she got a very fresh egg for breakfast.

There was a little quiet time chatting with Lola and some fun time with Tosca.  These dogs are so sweet and they just love Evie.  They like to nudge, lick and snuggle her.  Tosca the grey one doesn’t even mind licking her hair, which we found funny because our dog is very careful not to get her hair in a lick.

After breakfast and a dog walk we were off to the local farmers market to get some treats and local beef for supper.  We had tacos and they were yummy.  I don’t know if it was all of the country air and activity but Evie devoured her supper that night.  After the market it was down to the river for a little practice fishing and frog watching, we even saw a snake in the water!

Farm-sitting Day 1….with “teenagers”!

We recently spent an extra long weekend farmsitting. The “teenagers” (aka Karam, Hilary and Sammy) who aren’t actually teenagers, spent the first day with us to help us settle in and play with Evie. She adores them and had so much fun. As you can see from the pictures they made mud pies, danced Gangnam in the kitchen, played Candyland and made mug brownies for dessert (mmmm, so good). After the girls left we took the dogs for a nice walk before bedtime for some birdwatching at dusk. So beautiful and quiet, except for the birds. Evie got to use her birthday binoculars a lot.
Notice the cute pink and purple friendship bracelet on Evie’s arm, the talented Hilary made it. Evie loves it!

The Big 5!

Evie has officially turned five. She has been talking about her birthday forever and what to have as her special birthday supper. In the end she chose cheese pizza and sprinkle cake. I made Sally’s funfetti cake (www.sallysbakingaddiction.com). Check out her website she has a lot of yummy treats, we follow her religiously for recipes and the delicious pictures, Evie has a whole list of what she wants to make from there, most involve sprinkles. Sally loves sprinkles and I am pretty sure that when Evie is an adult she too will still love sprinkles.

The cake turned out great and was even better a day or two after, got a little moister. If I make that cake again, I will definitely do it a day or two ahead of time.

Here is the cake, we covered it nonpareils but left the number 5 un-nonpareiled. Is that even a word?

There are even sprinkles inside the cake, double the sprinkle concentration!

She got her own binoculars for birdwatching, some new books and more of her favourite coloured pencils to add to her collection.

The birthday party with her friends was also a lot of fun. It was at a cooking school and the children, in little chef hats and little aprons made pizza, fruit snacks and decorated cupcakes. Everyone had a great time, it was lots of fun and extremely cute.
